September 2017

Iceland Outdoor Adventure Trip!

with Sheryl McGlochlin

September 21 - September 29, 2017

Iceland has become one of my favorite international adventure destinations because of it's diversity.  It is a true outdoor playground for adventure seekers.  I love meeting people from all walks of life while relaxing in a geothermal pool under the stars, which is also a local favorite pastime. Boiling mud pools, spurting geysers, glaciers, craters, waterfalls on steroids and so much more will make you love this land as much as I do!

It's nearly impossible to pronounce most of the words in the Icelandic language but the locals, many of whom speak English, are very warm, kind and helpful. Lava fields cover one ninth of the land while glaciers cover one eighth of the country!  All of those glaciers create some spectacular waterfalls.

In Iceland it feels like you are either on the moon or in Hawaii, Yellowstone National Park, Alaska or Southern Utah!  It is home to the largest National Park in Europe.  Iceland is all about fire and ice, hot and cold. For me it is romantic, magical, and very spiritual.

I hope you'll join us.

September 21 – Leave SLC and fly to Keflavik, Iceland. (Depart SLC between 11 AM - 2 PM)

September 22 - Arrive in Keflavik 6:45 AM.  Spend the day exploring the beautiful city of Reykjavik on bike and/or on foot.  Reykjavik is rich in history and has much to offer including several museums! The harbor, boats, modern buildings, museums, shops, restaurants, etc. could keep you busy for days!  If the weather permits, join me on a bike ride to an historic Lighthouse!  This popular paved boardwalk is a multi purpose path (runners, walkers, bikes) near the ocean and is located near several popular sites in Reykjavik!

Enjoy some of the most delicious pastries and chocolate Europe has to offer!  After a full day of sight seeing, exploring, bike riding, walking, etc. plan to swim and/or relax in a local geothermal pool before retiring.

Outdoor geothermal pools are part of our routine each day, some of which include steam rooms, saunas, hot salt water pools, water slides and very clean swimming pools!  (B, L, D)

September 23 – Our last chance to visit the city of Reykjavik before spending the rest of our time in the country.  By 11 AM, we’ll pack up and drive northeast to our beautiful home near to the stunning Skogafoss.  Along the way we'll stop and explore a few waterfalls but there is an incredible hiking trail near our home in Skogar.  Enjoy another delicious home cooked dinner before relaxing under the stars in another geothermal pool.  (B, L, D)

September 24 – Plan to hike to several stunning waterfalls within only a 6 mile hike RT!  This trail continues much further up the mountain if you prefer OR save some time to explore some local history in a museum nearby. During the next several days we'll

1) explore a fascinating farming town with many geothermal greenhouses, geothermal bakery, shops and hot pots

2) hike along a moderate 6 mile RT trail leading to several geothermal hot pots.  Again this trail continues further than this so you have options.  At the 3 mile marker, you may stop and relax in a FREE natural hot springs pool on the mountain before heading further up the trail or back down the mountain. Each night we spend time outside looking up into the heavens for the Northern Lights.  Brilliant stars and another geothermal pool opportunity await you in the evening after dinner. (B, L, D)

September 25 – During this trip you will get acquainted with several waterfalls, all with their own distinct personality! Some waterfalls allow you to hike to the top of i.e 350 stairs, walk behind, walk across a bridge, down a hill or walk inside a mini slot canyon to view them. We'll walk around and into craters and hike to glaciers. Before leaving this neck of the woods, plan to visit the beautiful town of Vik, which has some amazing hikes, a bird sanctuary, unique black sand beaches and much more.

(B, L, D)

September 26 – Plan to get an education about volcanos and glaciers as they are everywhere!  We'll do a 10 minute hike to yet another natural geothermal pool on the side of the mountain surrounded by at least 25 smaller waterfalls leaking out of the mountain.  This trail continues further as well if you want to explore further. (B, L, D)

September 27 & 28

Today we travel to Vik, spend time climbing strange pillars located on a beautiful black sand beach and hiking with more incredible waterfalls, ocean lookout points and amazing views in all directions, located on this most southern tip of Iceland. Vik is also a fun town to explore with local art galleries and artisans selling home crafted items. A short hike will take you to amazing bird sanctuaries. The black sand beach is a great place to watch a sunset before dinner. After Vik, we'll spend a few days in Hella visiting more hot pots, geysers, waterfalls, rivers, geothermal bakery, etc. Soak in another geothermal pool along the way if you like. (B, L, D)

September 29 - After breakfast, we'll pack up and drive west toward Keflavik stopping along the way in Selfoss to purchase any last minute gifts to take home, including delicious Icelandic chocolate! Enjoy one last day of geothermal pools and some of the best gelato in Iceland! As we travel back to Keflavik, we’ll stop along the way and explore a few areas we missed. No trip to Iceland is complete without stopping at the most famous geothermal pool in all of Iceland, The Blue Lagoon. It is truly magical and it's not crowded! They limit the amount of people in the pools.  This is the only geothermal pool that allows you to pamper yourself with a rich mineral mud facial! (This is an additional cost but well worth it!) Blue Lagoon mud and facial products are also available to purchase online or on location as well.  (B, L)

September 29 -  There are several options in Keflavik for an authentic Icelandic meal.  Everyone, on their own dime, will be able to eat whatever they would like before driving to the airport at 3 PM, in time for a 5:30 PM flight home. (B, L)
