THANK YOU in advance for visiting my website.

I know it can be hard to show up for some of these outdoor adventures and not know a head of time what you are getting in to!

I think you will be happy with what you find.

I meet so many new people who come and join us hiking or snowshoeing, not knowing anyone.

Many of these people become my best friends!

I am always so impressed with the determination and bravery it takes to join a new outdoor adventure group and then commit to coming back.

Thank you for being open enough to try a new sport and be willing to look for new friends in our group. 

Like everyone else who joins us, we all have a desire to reduce stress, live a more active lifestyle, play and be adventurous in the outdoors!




Outdoor Adventure Club

You are invited to get acquainted with us in our amazing outdoor playground: the Wasatch Mountains!  You may join us without any monetary commitment for 2 hikes.   After that, please go to my website, liveandthrive.com, and become a member of our Outdoor Adventure Club ($35/annual membership fee/person).  Feel free to pay online or in person.  If you are unable to pay due to unemployment, etc., let me know. 

As much as we love hiking, our Outdoor Adventure Club is so much more than that.  In addition to the 162 hikes per year, you are invited to join us for 188 more outings, classes, trips and private clothing/equipment/gear sales.

We even feed our hikers each week!  Every Saturday, you'll enjoy delicious, complimentary bagels provided by a local business. 

Regarding new outdoor products recently introduced to the market, you are invited to sample and test some of these products. 

As a member, join us on a variety of outings including hiking and camping trips, Utah weekend adventure vacations, land paddling, Zipfy Riding, bike riding, freeline skating, flat water kayaking, stand up paddle surfing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, international adventure travel, hooping, downhill skiing, Dutch oven cooking, etc.    

But wait, there's more!  

I am proud of my unofficial "match-making" skills over the past 10 years of hiking!  To date, 20 people are hopefully a lot happier from 10 marriages that have been created from our hiking group!  Other members continue to date someone they met from our group.  This service alone is worth $35/year.  

I am confident you will be impressed with all we have to offer and the high caliber of adults we attract.

New people are streaming in all the time. 

For those of you who have young children or are looking for outdoor adventures for your family, we have recently partnered with an outdoor adventure group that specializes in family adventures, catering to children of all ages!

Who joins our hiking group?

People with a positive, adventurous, friendly, kind and caring attitude.  Our members are asked to keep an eye out for each other while hiking. Our safety record speaks for itself.  We have been able to care for anyone who was struggling within our group.  There really is safety in numbers.  This is a non-competitive hiking group.  We are creative enough to accommodate a wide variety of hiking abilities, skills, interests and levels.  

Communication

With 2500+ members and more than 350 events/classes offered each year, it's important for me to be an effective communicator.  

My job is to make sure you hear the latest news and are easily "plugged in" to what's happening. 

Your job is to decide which events and outings you want to attend.

I'll make it easy for you to be informed. 

Here are a few ways: 

  1. "Live and Thrive Outdoor Adventure Calendar":  Check this calendar often since it's updated regularly. When you RSVP for an event, you also sign a waiver, which is important to do.   
  2. Join Meetup.com, "Sheryl's Outdoor Adventure Group":  This is the best way to receive regular email reminders to all my events.  You'll hear about an event first - as soon as I post it.  There is no cost to join Meetup.  Sign up by going to: meetup.com.  After a few basic fields of info, they ask you: 1)  What do you want to do (type in HIKE)  2)  Where do you want to do it  (type in SALT LAKE CITY).  "Sheryl's Outdoor Adventure Group" will be one of the groups you'll see. Join it and you're done!  If you don't want to attend an outing, DON'T RESPOND and delete the email.  If you want to attend, RSVP.  Just know that the "RSVP count" is never accurate.  If it says 10 people have RSVP'd, just know that there are probably 20 people attending. People stream into my Outdoor Adventure Group from several sources other than meetup.com.  Our attendance is always higher than what appears on meetup.com.
  3. Sign up for my Live and Thrive Newsletters - Even if you have joined meetup.com, please sign up for the newsletters on my website.  I only send emails out occasionally so you won't be bombarded with emails from me.  On my Newsletter Link, you'll see a variety of newsletters I offer.  This is how you stay in the loop and get invited to special events.  Check any and all boxes that interest you.

What to bring

  • Back pack
  • Water - 1 liter of water/hour of hiking is recommended.  Generally 2 liters of water is sufficient for our 2 - 3 hour hikes. Bring and drink your water!  It's easy to forget to do this.
  • Healthy Snack - trail mix, peanut butter and jam sandwiches, dried fruit, granola bars, etc.

What to wear

#1 Priority:  Invest in quality light weight hiking shoes.

Hiking socks i.e Smart Wool brand are highly recommended.

My favorite brand of hiking shoe is KEEN.

Dress in layers during cooler spring and fall days.

It's very easy to do if you "DRESS and THINK LIKE AN ONION"!  Your clothing layers need to be thin like an onion.  Avoid all cotton fabrics since cotton absorbs moisture, something you don't want when you are sweating in cold weather.

Every Saturday morning of the year, I meet in person with members of our group and give a little demonstration and answer questions on what to wear and why I recommend it.

I also sell gently used, quality outdoor clothing items (for men & women, all sizes) nearly every Saturday.

Days & times of hikes

You are invited to a minimum of 162 hiking or snowshoeing outings each year.

These are offered 3 times a week, approx. 2 - 3 hours per day, 52 weeks of the year, AND also special holidays and weekend vacations. 

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, regardless of the weather, we are either hiking or snowshoeing!

What sets us apart from other groups is our consistency. 

We don't cancel a hiking outing unless there is a major earthquake or the equivalent, which there hasn't been during over the last 10 years we've been hiking. 

SATURDAY meetup TIMES vary depending on the season.

The following times are when we LEAVE the meeting place. (Drive time from meeting place to trailhead is approx. 10 - 25 minutes, unless otherwise stated.  I'll notify everyone how long the drive is before we form carpools. Come 15 minutes prior to departure to be part of a carpool and to hear last minute instructions regarding the hike.  Hikers are off the trail by 12 noon unless otherwise stated.

  • Dec. 1 - Feb. 29:  9 am
  • March 1 - May 31:  8:30 am
  • June 1 - Aug. 31:  8 am
  • Sept. 1 - Nov. 30:  8:30 am

NOTE:  I reserve the right to change the hiking location at a moments notice due to weather and road conditions. For this purpose, I encourage everyone to meet at our meeting place rather than the trailhead. 

Every Saturday morning throughout the year, 30 minutes prior to leaving for the hike, I offer an in-person free hiking orientation. If a guest or family member attends a hike with you, please encourage them to attend this short orientation.  I enjoy meeting new people before we leave for a hike.   

8:30 am: Meeting time for EVERY weekday hike, Tuesday and Thursdays, throughout the year. We leave by 8:40 am.  If you don't see anyone at 8:30 am, just wait a few minutes.  Weekday hikes generally have 3 - 12 people. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday hikes are day hikes, approx. 2 - 3 hours long.  An extended hike will be posted online prior to the hike.  You are always allowed to leave early, at anytime, for any reason, however, before you leave we ask that you tell someone, so we know what happened to you.    


Assistant Guides 

I always have assistant guides for each hike.  Mike and Anna are my main assistant guides and have been with me for nine years.  If they are not there, I will assign someone to assist me that day.  I am in the front of the group and will notify everyone who is the "caboose" for the day.  The "caboose" is generally a stronger hiker that looks out for hikers toward the back of our group.  Everyone is somewhere between me and the "caboose". 

When I see the caboose, I know everyone is accounted for.  

My background & experience

Read MY STORY to learn how I got started in 2003.  Since then the hiking group has grown to 2500+ members, from all walks of life, including locals to new friends from all around the world.  I've lead hikes in the Swiss Alps, and 1200+ hikes on nearly every trail in the Wasatch Mountains and beyond - covering many waterfall trails in Maui and throughout all parts of Utah.  Since January 2010, I have been an Outdoor Enthusiast Contributor for KSL TV's Studio 5 program.  I am a mother of four grown children, wife of one, grandmother of four.  I have been in the "nurturing business" for the past 33 years.  It helps my hikers understand why I expect all those who hike with me to be caring, friendly, and helpful to those around them.

How to enjoy Hiking from Day One

New people join us every week of the year. Many are new to hiking and may be new to Utah's higher altitude. I love embracing new hikers for the same reasons I love hiking.  

  • Don't push yourself too hard on the first few hikesIt will take time to earn your hiking legs.  ALL of us have had to earn our hiking legs and it takes time to develop muscle and strength for this sport. Take it easy and go slow.
  • Go for a much shorter time in the beginning.  You can do that by either driving to the trailhead or riding with someone who may be leaving early.
  • Make sure you stretch after a hike.
  • Take a hot bath and relax your muscles.
  • Always consult a physician before starting any new exercise program.
  • Inform me and/or my assistant guides of any medical condition we need to be aware of.
  • If you take it easy and come often, then slowing start to increase the length of time you hike a little more each time, you'll be amazed at how strong you will become. 
  • In contrast, we've seen new people push themselves too hard in the beginning, trying to keep up with the strongest, fastest hikers in the group only to see them on rare occasions.

Hiking Benefits

Besides the obvious benefits of losing unwanted pounds, increasing stamina, and toning up core muscles, hiking is a fantastic stress reducer!  It's one of the best ways to increase your mental and emotional health not to mention financial health, since it's a very inexpensive way to take a quick, much-needed vacation for a few hours! 

Bathroom concerns

You'll find bathroom facilities at many trailheads, however, not at all of them.  There are, however, many trees along the way.  If you need to take a pit stop, please tell someone that you are stepping off the trail to do so.  Leave your backpack with someone OR at the trail where you stepped off so we know where to find you if necessary.  If you don't tell anyone before you leave the trail, you may get left behind on the trail.  It is important to know where everyone is when hiking with a group. All of our members are very well mannered and will give you plenty of privacy.  I always carry a bottle of sanitizer and some toilet paper with me in my backpack for these reasons.

Finding out about each hike

Check my Outdoor Adventure Calendar for details on all hiking outings.  As we get closer to the hike, especially the day before, I'll post very specific details about where we are going.  Just know that ALL hikes I offer are great for beginner and moderate levels of hikers.  Beginners may not be able to go as fast or as far as the more moderate hiker but they are invited. If you are not sure about your abilities, plan to drive to the trailhead.

Accommodating a variety of physical abilities/skills and larger amounts of people 

Once we are at the trailhead, we don't say "See you in 3 miles or at the peak" then leave you in the dust. We have learned how to accommodate several hiking abilities all at the same time, within our group.  We have creative ways of keeping everyone at an ability and speed they are comfortable with.  Stronger, faster hikers are able to move ahead without putting pressure on those who are slower or want to take photos along the way.

With larger groups, before we leave our meeting place, we'll divide the group up into smaller groups with similar abilities.  They may hike different trails in the same area of the canyon.  

Dogs and Children

Children

A Family Adventure Group has teamed up with us that I am excited to start promoting!  Accommodating families with children is something I've wanted to do for a long time.  Watch the calendar for specific hikes and outings that are family oriented and geared for younger children. This is also a great way for adults who may want something much slower and easier than our adult hiking group.  This is the perfect way to meet new people while acclimating themselves to easy mountain trails.

Dogs

Many of our canyons along the Wasatch Front do not allow dogs in them, due to the watershed.  Utah is the 2nd driest state in the country.  Utah officials are very protective of the water supply from our canyons.  Millcreek Canyon allows dogs, but always email me ahead of time if you want to bring your pooch and know that you may need to keep them on a leash.  You will also either need to be way in front of the group or in the very back since dogs tend to run up and down a trail a lot.

Where we meet

Get acquainted with the ONE specific place we meet for all hiking outings. It's known as "6200 South Wasatch UTA Park n Ride".

Find us at the far SOUTH end of the parking lot.

If you are at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon (Ft. Union Blvd and Wasatch Blvd near 7/11 Store), it is the next intersection NORTH of there on Wasatch Blvd.

This is a newer Park n Ride area than the one at Ft. Union Blvd.  The mouth of BCC was getting too congested so they built this one. There are signs nearby that lead you to this 6200 So. Park n Ride. 

If you live closer to the trailhead and want to meet the group there, make sure you contact me within the hour of the hike to make sure we really are going there, since I reserve the right to change the hiking trail at the very last minute due to weather or road conditions.  

Go to the meeting place FIRST, for this reason, if at all possible. 

You may drive directly home afterward, if you prefer.

Bringing a guest

Those who attend our hikes need to be familiar with this orientation material and have read it prior to coming on a hike.  They may attend one of the weekly Hiking Orientations given at our meeting place each Saturday as well.  They also need to be willing to sign a waiver as well.   If possible, tell me a head of time if you plan to bring someone new with you. 

Speak up!

If you have any concerns, questions, etc. please email me ahead of time or come early and talk with me at the meeting place. It tends to get hectic once we are on the trail.  However, if there is a problem that arises WHILE we are hiking, please speak up to whoever you are near and tell them how you feel.  We have been able to avoid some serious problems and big expenses by speaking up and helping each other.  Please let us know if you feel uncomfortable about anything, for whatever reason. There are plenty of amazing people who come every week, who would do whatever was required of them to help another person in need IF they know about it. We ask everyone to carry a little extra food and water for this very reason as well. On any given day, any one of us could be struggling and might need some help.  Please let us know.

Staying safe on the mountain

Many years ago when I moved to Hawaii and getting ready to go swimming and surfing in the ocean for the first time, I remember thinking that it looked so inviting and beautiful.  A few minutes later, after my first time body surfing, I had a whole new respect for this body of water.  It's not as kind as it looks!  It's the same thing for the mountains.  Standing away from the mountains they appear to be very kind, beautiful and inviting but there are dangers all over the place when you start hiking in them.

  1. Falling - probably one of the most common things we see are people not watching carefully where they are walking. It's very easy to look away for just a second and trip over a rock, branch or root hiding on the trail.
  2. Stay on the trail - 
  3. There really is "safety in numbers" - snakes, animals, human predators, etc. hear us coming and avoid bothering us as a group.  
  4. When you hear about hikers having to be rescued from the mountain, most of the time, they were either 1) alone when they got into trouble  2) hiking with people who were not familiar with trails or dangers on the mountain 

As a group we work hard at taking care of each other and utilizing our own skills and abilities to get someone off the mountain safely if there is a problem.

Carpool Arrangements

There are several reasons why we carpool. Parking is limited at the trailheads, so carpools are necessary. Some don't like driving in the canyons while others may have an unreliable vehicle.  Regardless of the reason, we always carpool.  I try to keep people with similar hiking skills carpooling together.  If you want to come back early, there may be others who want to join in and leave when you do. If you are a rider, please give your driver $2 - $3 as a courtesy since the canyons do take a toll on a vehicle besides just gas expense.  If you are a driver, do not text or talk on your cell phone with passengers in your car.  If you do so, you may quickly get a reputation as someone to avoid riding with. Besides being unsafe, it makes passengers in your car feel very uncomfortable, especially when driving in the canyons.  Also, when coming down steeper 8 - 9% grades, make sure you use a lower gear to control your speed rather than burning up your brakes. We just ask everyone to be considerate and use common sense when driving passengers up and down a canyon.
